Cristiano Ronaldo. Where to begin with him. A legend in every sense of the word. There is nothing the guy hasn’t done or can’t do. Some consider him the best player in the world and the greatest football player ever but no matter what his critics say, there is no denying his talent and that he is a true icon to the game. Here are 20 reasons why Ronaldo is the greatest footballer in history.
- 4 Ballon d’or awards
Having won the award in 2008, 2013, 2014 & 2016, Ronaldo has now won the award 4 times and has now got the most Ballon d’or awards ever for a European player in the history of the award and the 2nd most ever. Only Lionel Messi has more than him (5).
- He’s won the Premier League
Ronaldo won the Premier League 3 times during his day at Manchester United in 2006/07, 2007/08 & 2008/09. The Premier League is arguably the best league in the world and is the most physical and toughest league so winning it isn’t a walk in the park. Just ask legends such as Steven Gerrard. To win a treble of Premier League medals can’t go unnoticed.
- Won treble PFA awards
In the 2006/07 season Ronnie bagged a hattrick of PFA awards as he scooped the PFA Young Player of the year award, PFA Fans’ Player of the year award & the PFA Players’ Player of the year award. This shows the serious talent that Ronaldo showcased in the toughest league in the world.
- UEFA Champions League top scorer 5 times
The Portuguese legend has won the top scorer award in Europe’s biggest competition 5 times in his career. 2007/08, 2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15 & 2015/16 saw him outscore some of Europe’s best strikers to land the award which shows his world class capability.
- Been in FIFA World XL every year since 2007
Due to his heroics every season, the Real Madrid man has been named in the FIFA FIFPro World Xl every year since 2007! That means he has been in the team an astonishing 10 times signalling his world class talent.
- European Golden Shoe Winner
It takes a pretty special player to outscore the rest of Europe especially when it contains players such as Suarez, Messi and co. Ronaldo however, has managed to do this on 4 different occasions in his sublime career, in 2007/08, 2010/11, 2013/14 & 2014/15. He has also won the trophy in 2 different countries and 2 different league, being the first player to ever do this.
- FIFA Men’s Award
Not only did he win the Ballon d’or for last season’s achievements with Real Madrid but he also won The Best FIFA Men’s Player award for 2016 meaning he clearly ranked the best player in the world for the 2015/16 season.
- Scored in every minute
How great and prolific in front of goal do you have to be to score in every minute of an official football game? Well, Ronaldo has done it during his career just highlighting the amount of goals he scores.
- Record goal scorer in the Champions League
The Portuguese currently holds the record for the all-time goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 95 goals. This has to announce his world class status as the Champions League is the biggest trophy in Europe.
- Most Hat-tricks in La Liga history
The Real Madrid legend has the record for most La Liga Hat-tricks in the history of the league with 32. He is also the fastest La Liga player to reach 200 league goals, which he done in 178 games. Staggering.
- Real Madrid all-time top goal scorer
To be the record goal scorer for arguably the biggest and greatest club in the world has to be a major achievement. Ronaldo surpassed Raul as Madrid’s record goal scorer and now sits with 390 goals for the club.
- National Hero
If he weren’t already, it is now safe to say that Cristiano Ronaldo is a national hero. He has been captain of the Portuguese national team for 9 years (since July 2008) and after winning a major trophy for Portugal in the summer at Euro 2016, many locals would regard him as a national hero.
- National Hero Pt. 2
Continuing on from the last point, it isn’t just being captain and winning Euro 2016 that makes Ronaldo a national hero. The Portuguese is the most capped player in Portugal’s history with 138 caps for his country. He is also Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 71 goals, now making him fourth in the all-time list of international scorers. He was also named best Portuguese player of all time by the Portuguese Football Federation in 2015 which helps prove how legendary he is at club and international level.
- Euro Mastermind
Ronaldo’s record at the Euros is very special. The Portuguese got to the 2004 final in his first ever Euros, losing in the final but made up for that in the summer of 2016 with a win over France. Ronaldo became the all-time top scorer in the UEFA European Championship (including qualifying) with 23 goals showing his love for the competition while also becoming the first player to score at four consecutive European Championship finals, and he also equalled Michel Platini’s all-time record for most goals scored in the competition (9). It’s likely that he’ll only add to these prestigious records with him still having enough time in his playing career to compete in one more European championship.
- Humble Human-being
This last one may have nothing to do with his footballing ability but it’s still worth a mention as a finishing touch. For years, Ronaldo was deemed as arrogant and cocky especially after his behaviour at the 2006 World Cup but over the years we have seen that this is not the case. He may have a swagger and confidence on the pitch but off it, he is a kind-hearted human-being. Countless times he has been spoken about in articles for giving vast amounts of money to sick children or charities. As you can also see from the videos below, he isn’t afraid to interact and integrate with his fans in public either.
Many football fans have different opinions. Some think he’s a great and legend. Some think he is average. Some believe he is the greatest player to ever play the game. What can’t be denied however, is he is a legend in the game and will go down in the list of the all-time icon players, despite how highly individuals may rate him.
