N’Golo Kante or Paul Pogba? It’s a massive debate that continues to circle the footballing word. One cost Chelsea £32 Million, which now looks like the bargain of the decade while the other cost a world record £89 Million but has arguably been second best to the former.
Both are great players and have plenty of time to develop and improve at 24 & 25, respectively. Kante grabs all the headlines for the obvious reasons however. The little French midfielder has been world class this season with even midfielder legend; Frank Lampard stating him as “The best midfielder in the world, currently.” Kante boasts some incredible stats in his first season at Chelsea to even surpass his heroic first season in English football with Leicester city. Some say he was the mastermind behind Leicester’s miracle title last season and with his summer transfer to Chelsea, it looks as if these theories are accurate as he steers closer to his second premier league title in 2 years, with 2 different clubs.
Kante’s impressive stats show he has played 27 games this season, missing just the one league game so far, this season playing 2418 minutes. He boasts some of the best midfield stats in the league with 1655 total passes, 88% pass completion, 17 key passes, 67 tackles won, 63 interceptions and 0 errors leading to goals, highlighting his midfield dominance this season.
Paul Pogba. Where to start with him. United re-signed the French midfielder in the summer of 2016 for a world record fee after letting him leave for free years previous. After a trophy-laden 4 years in Italy, with Juventus, he returned ‘home’ to the red side of Manchester and has received mixed reviews in his first season back in English football.
Paul boasts similar stats to Kante, which may silence some of his biggest critics. Pogba has completed 25 out of 28 league games so far, completing 2250 minutes of action. The French star has completed a total 1844 passes, 85% pass completion, 47 key passes, 35 tackles won, 40 interceptions and 0 errors leading to goals.
From the stats (via Squawka), it is evident to see that Pogba has played a few games less than Kante but still reads with similar performance ratings. Pogba reads better than his French counterpart when it comes to total passes and key passes completed but Kante does have the advantage over the United midfielder in pass completion/accuracy, tackles won and interceptions.
From the statistic readings, we can see that both French midfielders have been in top form this season but it appears that Kante gets the plaudits while Pogba gets constant criticism. Perhaps the reason for this is due to Kante’s heroics with Leicester last season or because of his much lower price tag. Pogba is always going to find critics in his performances because of his price tag and for the fact of playing for Manchester united, which comes with its own pressure and intensity from rival club’s fans.
The best thing to do is appreciate both players while they both remain in the Premier League and grace two top club’s midfields. Yes, Kante might get the plaudits and praises now but Pogba has also been quietly pulling the strings from United’s midfield this season and both players will be hoping to steer their club’s to doubles this season. (Chelsea – Premier League & FA Cup double; Man United – EFL Cup & Europa League double).
